HIRING REFEREES AND TIMEKEEPERS

Join our team of qualified referees and timekeepers for the upcoming 2018/2019 ball hockey season at Central Sports Club! We are dedicated to the engagement of Okanagan ball hockey players, while providing a fun, safe playing environment.

Referees and timekeepers are expected to both enforce the rules of the sport and maintain a level of sportsmanship and fun at all UROBHL leagues, tournaments, drop-ins and events. Our officials should have a sound knowledge of the sport and ability to make calls if necessary.

NOTE: This position must be available to work daytime on Sundays, and evenings on Monday and Wednesday from 6pm-10pm.

REFEREE

Your duty as a ball hockey official is to act as an impartial judge and this duty carries with it an obligation for the official to perform with accuracy, consistency, objectivity, and the highest sense of integrity. 

In order to preserve and encourage confidence in the professionalism and integrity of officiating, officials must first foster ethical behaviour:

  • Place the safety and welfare of the participants above all else
  • Accept responsibility for all actions taken
  • Be impartial
  • Avoid any situation which may lead to a conflict of interest
  • Be courteous, respectful and open to discussion and interaction
  • Seek continual self-improvement through study, & performance evaluation
  • Be a positive role model for both the participants and officials in your behavior and personal appearance
  • Refrain from any form of personal abuse towards participants
  • Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards participants
  • Show concern and caution towards sick and injured participants

 Responsibilities: 

  • Must have a clear understanding of sport rules & regulations and experience officiating ball hockey.
  • Exercise authority to eject any player from the activity and stop game if there is any game misconduct. 
  • Must wear proper attire while on duty.
  • Promoting sportsmanship.
  • Report fair play points and comments of teams on score sheets to supervisors after all games.
  • Be very familiar with UROBHL Handbook- policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills

We are looking for the following attributes:

  1. A generally athletic individual (can move up and down the floor easily)
  2. A strong understanding of the rules of hockey (game flow)
  3. Good communication skills, (diplomat)
  4. Calm controlled demeanor - (strength under pressure)
  5. Experience is an asset, we are willing to train the right individuals.

  Qualifications:

  • Hockey officiating experience
  • Referee Certification is not required but considered a definite asset.

Preferred consideration will be given to candidates who hold current certification or who have previous officiating certification and/or experience.

Timekeeper

Your duty as a ball hockey timekeeper is to act as an impartial judge, scorekeeper, team liaison and this duty carries with it an obligation to perform with accuracy, consistency, objectivity, and the highest sense of integrity. 

Pay Rate – $12/game. Games are 2 – 25 minute halves.

In order to preserve and encourage confidence in the professionalism and integrity of UROBHL, timekeepers must first foster ethical behaviour:

  • Place the safety and welfare of the participants above all else
  • Accept responsibility for all actions taken
  • Be impartial
  • Avoid any situation which may lead to a conflict of interest
  • Be courteous, respectful and open to discussion and interaction
  • Seek continual self-improvement through study, & performance evaluation
  • Be a positive role model for both the participants and officials in your behavior and personal appearance
  • Refrain from any form of personal abuse towards participants
  • Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards participants
  • Show concern and caution towards sick and injured participants

 Responsibilities: 

  • Hand out and verify game roster sheets with team representatives
  • Submit game roster sheets, score sheets and any reports at the end of each game
  • Ongoing communication with team representatives/players
  • Enforce UROBHL rules and polices
  • Contribute point of view regarding on and off court incidents
  • Arrive for scorebox shifts in a timely manner
  • Track time and penalty minutes on time clock
  • Fill out scoresheet during game
  • Required to complete incidents/accident reports for any injury during league play
  • Required to know league rules and make interpretations as necessary
  • Other duties as assigned.
